Sustainability through intelligent batteries

Batteries are crucial to the transition to clean energy and mobility. Global demand is massively increasing. However, they are also one of the most expensive components in the products we rely on for the energy and transportation transition is dependent on the use of renewable energy sources, for example in electric vehicles or energy storage systems, which are necessary for an adequate power supply at all times. As well, the impact on nature during the extraction of the raw materials required for batteries and during production is enormous. In view of these factors, a long service life, best possible performance and safe secondary utilisation are critical in order to minimise the waste of resources.

Prof Dirk Uwe Sauer and Dr Kai-Philipp Kairies have risen to these challenges. With the ACCURE Battery Intelligence GmbH in Aachen, they have developed a cloud platform that makes it possible to analyse batteries more efficiently, more sustainably and securely. The platform formats the usage and laboratory data of the most diverse manufacturers. It then precisely determines and predicts the condition of the batteries. With the analytics software from ACCURE, customers can optimise their battery operation, extend the service life of their batteries by up to 25 per cent and, above all, detect potential safety risks at an early stage. Kairies is one of three founders of ACCURE. The company already has over 70 employees since it was founded in 2020.
An important success factor: close links with cutting-edge research. Professor Sauer is a scientific consultant and shareholder. ACCURE emerged from the largest European research group for Battery Systems at RWTH Aachen University.
